First Day of Fall: Rust, Plaid & a Little Gold

My first autumn look starts with the colors I want to live in this season: burnt rust, soft cream, and deep chocolate brown. Add a plaid mini and a little gold, and suddenly I’m mentally on my way to a café with absolutely no intention of rushing home.
For this Adriana Moon look, I started with a neat cardigan silhouette. A cardigan like this one gives you a starting point for recreating the outfit, with a chiffon top underneath to bring in that soft cream layer. I love how the lighter shade breaks up the richer autumn tones and draws the eye toward the face.
The plaid mini skirt brings the look together. In the illustration, its earthy browns connect the rust cardigan to the chocolate boots, while the pattern adds interest without needing another accessory. The shorter hem also gives those tall boots their moment—which they absolutely deserve.
A pair of knee-high boots balances the mini and gives the outfit a polished finish. I especially love deep brown with this palette; it keeps the whole color story warm, right down to your toes.
Then come the gold leaf earrings. A little literal autumn reference? Yes. And I stand by it. With the rest of the styling kept simple, they’re a lovely finishing detail.
For beauty, I’d pair this look with warm bronze eyes, a softly glossy cinnamon lip, and terracotta nails. A loose, textured updo leaves the earrings visible and adds a little softness around the face.
Prefer a longer skirt? Try the pencil skirt alternative and carry the same autumn palette into a different silhouette.
Consider this your inspiration for a lunch date, a bookstore afternoon, or welcoming fall even if the weather hasn’t quite gotten the memo.
